Is it wrong of me to dread the re-write though? I fear that it might end up being a virtual re-drafting of the whole thing.

Nothing is "wrong"--but rewrites can be a lot of work. Many writers like to have something down to deal with, even if there is an extensive rewrite ahead. I know I sure do. (In the process of a massive rewrite of 50k of something.)
